Review: LEGO Batman Video Game for the Sony PS3 and PSP

By now it should go without saying that we are big LEGO fans here at the DWithE Studios, and by ‘fans,’ I mean the true definition of the word ‘fanatic.’ A quick glace of our house will reveal various LEGO kits under construction, a smattering of LEGO blocks here and there, a set of LEGO logo cups in our cupboard, a LEGO block ice tray in the freezer and various incarnations of the LEGO video games, ie., LEGO Star Wars and LEGO Indiana Jones. In addition, I also hold a deep, dark secret, which I shall share with you now, and that is, “I’m Batman.” Yep, have been ever since I dressed up as the Dark Knight for Halloween over 35 years ago when I was 5. So when we were presented the opportunity to review TT Games’ LEGO Batman Video Game for the Sony PS3 and PSP, my 7-year-old son, Nikolai, and I shot each other a ‘this is it’ glance. Then we pushed the secret button to enter the Batcave, I donned my Batcowl, Nik put on his Robin mask, we booted up our Sony ‘Batcomputers’ and parked our respective Batbutts on the couch for some serious LEGO Batman gaming.

Now before we begin to grapple with this review, I should point out that LEGO Batman for the PS3 and PSP uses similar control buttons, and the game storyline is exactly the same as far as we can tell, however there are some game play differences, which I’ll get into later. Also, because I do not wish to ruin this gaming adventure for you with spoilers, I’m going to attempt to be rather vague in my descriptions regarding certain aspects of the game. However if you get stuck or need help or want the codes to unlock certain items in the game, a quick Google search will help you find what you need. Finally, be sure to check out Dale’s LEGO Batman Review for the XBox360 and Redboys’ Review for the Nintendo DS.

Welcome to Gotham City

The basic game play for LEGO Batman is similar to the game play found in LEGO Star Wars and LEGO Indiana Jones in that the game consists of multiple levels containing various riddles and challenges that you must solve to complete the level in the Story Mode. Once you have completed the level in Story Mode, it is unlocked for Free Play Mode. In Story Mode you are assigned the two characters that you must play for that level. As you move through the level, you collect LEGO Studs by basically smashing everything in sight. Once you collect a certain amount of Studs for each level, you become a Super Hero or Super Villain, which can be done in both Story Mode and Free Play Mode. As you play, keep an eye out for the 10 LEGO Canisters hidden throughout each level. Collect all 10 and you unlock a Minikit Model. Each level also contains a Red Power Brick, which usually requires you to perform a certain set of tasks in order to reveal it. Finding a Red LEGO Power Brick will unlock certain features and bonus content. It’s important to note that with the characters that you are assigned in Story Mode, you will not be able to collect all of the LEGO Canisters or Red Power Bricks, this is where the Free Play Mode comes in. In Free Play mode, you are able to select from unlocked characters that you would like to use as well as getting additional assigned characters to help you complete your tasks. So in a sense, you pretty much have to play each level twice, first in Story Mode and then again in Free Play Mode, to fully complete the level. And that’s basically if for playing in the LEGO World.

In LEGO Batman, you start out by playing the Dynamic Duo who are trying to save Gotham City from the evil scourge who have recently escaped from Arkham Asylum. 15 of Gotham’s most notorious and criminally insane have broken up into 3 teams lead by The Joker, The Riddler, and The Penguin and they are each out complete a caper with the help of the likes of Catwoman, Mr. Freeze, Clayface, The Mad Hatter, Two Face, and Scarecrow just to name a few. So in a sense, there are 3 Chapters in this game with each chapter consisting of 5 levels for a total of 15 levels. Then, in a first time twist for LEGO video games, you get to ‘replay’ each level from the Villains perspective, which requires you to complete and solve different task and puzzles first in Story Mode and then in Free Play Mode. This results in 30 levels of game play, however this does have a slightly negative effect on the game, which I will get into later under the heading The Dark Knight.

Batgadgets

Admit it, Batman would just be another guy running around in a cape if it weren’t for his cool gadgets. LEGO Batman really delivers on the Batgadgets, usually in the form of different suits. The suits are provided, but you’ll have to find them as you move through the Story Mode in order to perform certain tasks such as gliding across a gap (Glide Suit), climbing a metal wall (Magnet Suit), blowing things up (Demolition Suit), or controlling electronics (Technology Suit). In addition, Batman and Robin would be nowhere without their Batarang, which allows them to target and destroy multiple objects from a distance. Oh, and let’s not forget the Villains who have various weapons in their bag of tricks, such as Catwoman’s whip, Penguin’s penguin bombs, Riddler’s mind control cane, and Mr. Freeze’s freezegun. Finally, there are the vehicles, such as the Batmobile, Robin’s cycle, the Batboat, the Batwing, Joker’s helicopter, Penguin’s Submarine, and Killer Croc’s Airboat.

In Free Play Mode, you have access to all of Batman and Robin’s special suits, not to mention that once they are unlocked, Batgirl can stand in for Batman and Nightwing can stand in for Robin. How cool is that?

The Dark Knight

Now the nice thing about LEGO video games is that although it is full of destruction, it does it without blood and guts. However, LEGO Batman goes a little darker than its predecessors in that at times, you are required to play the game from the Villain’s perspective. Now at no time do you actually go up against the Dynamic Duo when playing the Villains, however you do go up against and are required to shoot Gotham City’s Police Force and S.W.A.T Team. Okay, I’ll admit that in LEGO Star Wars and LEGO Indiana Jones, you could and are encouraged to play the evil characters in order to help solve challenges such as using the high leaping General Grievous in LEGO Star Wars to extend your reach, however you were never required to shoot the Good Guys to complete the level. In LEGO Batman, you are required to shoot the Good Guys. Now the game is geared at 10+ partially for this reason, therefore, I accept that it is my decision and my responsibility when I play with my 7-year-old. Still, hearing your sweet, innocent child say, “Daddy, help me shoot the S.W.A.T. guys,” can make you cringe. There, you have been warned.

Wayne Manor and Arkham Asylum

One of Nik’s favorite features of the LEGO video games is the hidden level usually referred to as LEGO City, which allows you to basically smash everything in sight in order collect 1,000,000 LEGO Studs in the fastest time. LEGO Batman comes with not one, but two hidden ‘LEGO City’ levels: Wayne Manor and Arkham Asylum. I’m not going to tell you how to open these hidden levels, however I am going to say that they play differently from the LEGO Cities found in LEGO Star Wars and LEGO Indiana Jones. These differences in play make them much more of a challenge than running around and smashing things. And remember, if you get stuck, you can always Google for a solution.

Sony PS3 versus PSP

Now I already mentioned that the controls and storyline are the same for LEGO Batman on the PS3 and PSP. The differences are that the PSP is portable and comes with a smaller screen, so the graphics are not as crisp as they are playing LEGO Batman on a PS3, even when it is hooked up to a standard television as it is in our case (no, we haven’t gotten an HDTV… yet). The PSP is also much, much slower in loading the game. The other difference, which is a big factor for us, is that the PSP version of the game is single player while two people can play the PS3 version. You still have access to two characters while playing the PSP version, and you can switch back and forth between them by pressing the Triangle Button. The computer takes over the character you are not playing at the time. That said, Nik and I prefer the PS3 version because we can play as a Father and Son Team in order to solve the challenges presented in each level. The only drawback to this is we tend to occasionally bicker when Nik and I aren’t completely in sync. As an example, he goes left and I go right causing one or both of us to die. Tonya, my wife, would argue that this happens a lot and she usually leaves the room not wanting to listen to us constantly squabble like children. As for Nik and me, well we don’t know what she’s talking about.

Overall Impressions

This game is a lot of fun to play and explore with exciting puzzles and riddles to solve, which make Nik and me go “Ah-ha!” when we best them. So with that in mind, Nik has decided to give Lego Batman 100 Thumbs-up out of his patented 100 Thumbs. As for me, this video game isn’t perfect, but then again no video game is, however this one comes pretty close. I had a blast playing it with Nik, so it gets 7 Dancing Elephants out of 8. Can’t wait to see what LEGO and TT Games up with next, LEGO Superman perhaps, or how about LEGO Harry Potter?

Parting Thoughts

Of all of the characters one can play in this game, Nik’s favorite is Two Face and mine is Tropical Joker, who sports a Hawaiian Shirt… Guess we really do gravitate towards playing the bad boys.

E308: Get Movies on your PS3 and PSP via Playstation Network

It's no Netflix, but it's a start. If Sony wants to compete with the XBox 360, though, it'll have to do better than almost iTunes. Still, if you have a PSP, it's a better value than UMD's.

PLAYSTATION(R)Network's Video Delivery Service to Offer Movies and TV Shows for Purchase and Rental Through PLAYSTATION(R)3 and PSP(R) (Playstation(R)Portable)

New service to expand entertainment offering of PLAYSTATION 3 and PSP giving consumers downloadable content when and where they want it

FOSTER CITY, Calif., July 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) today launches the company's new video delivery service on PLAYSTATION(R)Store for PLAYSTATION(R)3 (PS3(TM)) and PSP(R) (PlayStation(R)Portable) systems in the United States. Consumers will have the ability to download full-length movies, television shows, and original programming accessible through the PLAYSTATION Store on PLAYSTATION(R)Network. With nearly 300 full length movies and more than 1,200 TV episodes, many available in both standard-definition (SD) and high-definition (HD), PLAYSTATION Network's video delivery service makes PS3 the ultimate entertainment platform and enhances PSP's status as a portable entertainment marvel. PLAYSTATION Network's video delivery service will become available later this evening.

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) will initially make available to consumers content for video rental and electronic sell-through from top movie studios including: 20th Century Fox, Lionsgate Entertainment, MGM Studios, Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Warner Bros. Entertainment as well as titles for rent from The Walt Disney Studios and a wide-ranging menu of popular titles from a variety of television partners.

"PLAYSTATION Network's video delivery service capitalizes on the superior value and entertainment potential of PS3 and PSP -- not only for gaming enthusiasts, but also for the millions of consumers looking to buy the best, most versatile solution for their home entertainment system," said Jack Tretton, president and CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment America. "The collaboration of Sony's film, TV and entertainment business units, coupled with our hardware and content offerings, provide consumers with entertainment experiences unlike any on the market."

The video delivery service will have full integration in the PLAYSTATION Network, utilizing the same login, wallet management, and user interface of the newly revamped PLAYSTATION Store. Video will be categorized, for example, by top rating, alphabetical order, television shows, and movies and content is also fully searchable, for example, by title, producer, studio and cast. In addition, PS3's progressive downloading means users can view content shortly after the downloading process begins. Background downloading is also a feature of PS3, allowing users to access other platform features such as gaming and other XMB(TM) (XrossMediaBar) content while a video is downloading to their consoles.

20th Century Fox's "Jumper", Lionsgate's "3:10 to Yuma", MGM's "Rocky", Paramount Pictures' "Cloverfield", Sony Pictures' "Spider-Man", and Warner Bros. Entertainment's "10,000 B.C." are a few of the titles available for electronic sell-through on the video service at launch. Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" will also be available for rent. Additionally, SCEI will be introducing original exclusive content such as

Xam'd: Lost Memories, an anime series developed by Sony Computer Entertainment Japan, delivered in SD and HD.

Consumers who rent a movie from the video delivery service have 14 days to watch the content. Once content playback is started, consumers have a full 24 hours to enjoy their rental. Pricing for rental movies at launch ranges from $2.99 to $5.99, and pricing for purchased movies ranges from $9.99 to $14.99. Sony has also adopted Marlin Digital Rights Management technology, an open industry standard for protecting and managing digital content, to provide consumers with flexible access to their content while ensuring digital rights are protected. Usage rules of the video download service will allow content for purchase to be shared on multiple activated devices including PS3 and PSP systems per PLAYSTATION Network account, depending on the type of content purchased by the user.

One of the biggest value propositions of PLAYSTATION Network's video delivery service is the ability to transfer digital content onto the PSP from the PS3. For the initial electronic sell-through or rental price, consumers can also transfer content onto multiple devices. The connectivity between PS3 and PSP platforms provides a seamless solution for those looking for entertainment experiences on their own terms -- on the go or in their living room -- all with a new-found freedom of not having to worry about TV schedules, movie listings or viewing on a desktop PC.

E308: Sony makes announcements for PS3, PS2, PSP (PS2 refuses to die; PS3 unable to thrive)

It has to be absolutely killing Sony that the PS2 is still doing better than the PS3, but here's what they have up their digital sleeve:

Sony Computer Entertainment America Announces New 80GB PLAYSTATION(R)3, Limited Edition PlayStation(R)2 Bundle, and PlayStation(R)Portable Entertainment Pack at E3 2008

Company Also Launches New PLAYSTATION(R)Network Video Delivery Service and Showcases More Than 140 First-Party and Third-Party Games Across All Platforms

LOS ANGELES, July 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) held its annual press conference today at the E3 Media & Business Summit, making a series of announcements which demonstrated the strength of the PlayStation brand across all three of its platforms and further leveraged the heritage and momentum of PlayStation's family of products to provide consumers with more compelling entertainment options than anyone in the videogame industry.

Starting in September 2008, the newly announced PLAYSTATION(R)3 (PS3(TM)) 80GB model will become the mainstay of the company's hardware line-up. The 80GB model will retail for $399, and will offer all of the features and functionality of the 40GB model with double the storage to accommodate more movies, graphics, music, photos and other entertainment content -- all for the same price. As with its predecessor, the new 80GB model will be a complete entertainment system comprising of a Blu-ray(TM) player, HDMI output, an integrated Wi-Fi connection, Cell Broadband Engine(TM) and a built-in 80GB hard-disk drive. The multi-functionality of the 80GB PS3, combined with more than 140 exclusive and third-party titles and the PLAYSTATION(R)Network, is a comprehensive entertainment value designed to appeal to a wide range of consumers from hard-core gamers to general entertainment enthusiasts.

Following the success of five PSP(R) (PlayStation(R)Portable) Entertainment Packs, SCEA announced the Ratchet and Clank(R) Size Matters PSP Entertainment Pack, a new bundle showcasing PSP's multi-functional feature set, targeted for holiday gift-giving. Launching in October 2008 for $199.99 MSRP, the bundle will include a limited-edition "Silver" PSP system with the highly acclaimed game, Ratchet and Clank(R) Size Matters; a blockbuster movie on UMD(R) (Universal Media Disc); a PLAYSTATION(R)Network voucher to download the innovative puzzle game, echochrome(TM) from PLAYSTATION(R)Store: and a 1GB Memory Stick PRO Duo(TM) for storing music, videos, photos and more.

In addition, SCEA introduced a new family entertainment bundle for the PlayStation(R)2 system, the most successful console in industry history. The limited-edition LEGO(R) Batman(TM): The Videogame PlayStation(R)2 Pack will feature the highly anticipated TT Games/Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment title LEGO(R) Batman(TM): The Videogame, Warner Home Video's Justice League: The New Frontier on DVD, and a PlayStation(R)2 system -- all for $149.99 MSRP, which represents a $30 savings for consumers if the contents were purchased separately. SCEA will also launch more than 130 new titles for PlayStation(R)2 system this year, totaling 10,000 PlayStation(R)2 titles by end of the year.

"It's undeniable we have three successful platforms, the broadest and best line-up of some of the biggest exclusives in the business, and are continuing to deliver compelling and original content to our consumers," said Jack Tretton, president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America. "Expect to see continued momentum this year as we remain focused on delivering products and services that extend the strength of our brand and reaffirms PlayStation's place at the center of consumers' homes."

Additionally, the company previewed more than 140 first and third-party games at E3 2008 proving its content line-up this year is unmatched in the industry due to its depth, breadth, and diversity. Throughout the holiday season and this fiscal year, SCEA and its third-party partners plan to release more than 140 software titles for the PS3 available on Blu-ray Disc(TM) (BD).

SCEA is also developing more than 50 games, game packs, and add-ons downloadable via PLAYSTATION(R)Network in North America this year, offering something for every taste, lifestyle and budget. Also, to continue offering greater value to PlayStation fans, SCEA will launch PS3 Greatest Hits program on July 28 with 10 first and third party titles at a reduced price of $29.99. The PS3 Greatest Hits titles include Warhawk(TM), Motorstorm(TM) and Resistance: Fall of Man(R) from SCEA; Call of Duty(R) 3, Activision(R); Need for Speed: Carbon, Electronic Arts; The Elder Scrolls(R) IV: Oblivion(TM), Bethesda(R) Softworks; Ninja Gaiden(R) Sigma, Tecmo(R); Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six(R) Vegas and Assassin's Creed(TM), Ubisoft(R).

SCEA also reiterated its commitment to make PLAYSTATION(R)Network the best entertainment experience in the industry, by announcing a new video delivery service on PLAYSTATION(R)Store for PS3 and PSP systems in the United States. The new video service, available today, allows U.S. consumers to download full-length TV shows and movies to both their PS3 and PSP through the PlayStation Store for rental or purchase.

In addition, SCEA further outlined progress against its revolutionary online experience, PlayStation Home. Highlighting new first party high definition virtual environments for hit PlayStation titles including, Unchartered: Drake's Fortune and Warhawk. With significant third party support already on board, Sony Computer Entertainment will be expanding the beta in Summer 2008 and commence the open beta service by Fall 2008.

Once again I'm faced with reviewing a video game based on a movie, in this case it’s WALL-E for the PS3 and the PSP. Now reviewing this genre of video games is not my favorite thing to do, but my partner in crime, my 6-year-old son Nik, insists that we really, really, really need to review these types of games. So we both wind up getting a chance to play the game, however I am the one who ends up getting charged with writing the review... Somehow I think he makes out on our collaboration, but who am I to argue with a 6 year old. “Pick your battles,” my wife, Tonya, tells me. Therefore, tonight Nik is charged with doing the dishes.

Now when we reviewed the Speed Racer video game, I tried out the game once, then we went to see the movie, after which playing the game was much more engaging. When we reviewed the Kung Fu Panda video game, we hadn't (and still haven't) seen the movie and I think our emotional attachment to the game suffered. Now with WALL-E, we saw the movie first, then a day later our review copies of the game arrived in our mailbox. So the emotional attachments to the characters and storyline were there, the question was whether that would help engage our interest in the game.

Almost right off the bat I realized why I detest reviewing video games based on movies; I already know where the story is going and what the payoff is at the end, and I want to get there--NOW. Unfortunately, in the case of WALL-E, being forced to fulfill a laundry list of challenges on a bleak, garbage-filled planet Earth with WALL-E really bites.

The Storyline

Without having to issue a "Spoiler Alert!" the story of WALL-E is the story of a future Earth that has been ravaged by pollution, trash, and mass consumerism. So the omnipresent company “Buy n Large” steps in to send the human inhabitants of the planet Earth on a 5-year vacation amongst the stars while their Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth Class, or WALL-E, robots clean up the place. Unfortunately, the vacation runs a little longer than expected by about 695 years, and one lone WALL-E unit is left cleaning up the place with his pet cockroach for company. Day after day he sets off to stack the garbage, one block at a time, until one unexpected day a space ship lands to deposit an Extraterrestrial Vegetation Evaluator, or EVE, to determine if Earth is ready to support life again. EVE's mission is to find a plant growing on Earth, WALL-E discovers that he is smitten with her, and so starts their adventure together.

Game Play

The PS3 and PSP versions are very similar in that game play consists of moving through levels with each level requiring a particular set of tasks to be completed before moving on to the next level. The tasks aren't particularly challenging, however there are exceptions and I'll get to those exceptions later. And though the overall arching story for the two games is similar, the individual levels and challenges are very different between the game versions. However, in the end, the story in each version follows the plot of the movie.

Controls

In the PS3 version, WALL-E takes full advantage of the SIXAXIS wireless controller using Left stick to move WALL-E and Right stick to control the Camera. Pushing the buttons results in a bevy of actions. The game also takes advantage of the motion detectors of the controller to throw trash cubes, in the case of WALL-E, and fly EVE when one is playing her. Now, I was brought up with the single joystick and red fire button of and Atari 2600, so it's taken me a while to adapt to moving game characters and camera movements at the same time, however, I think I'm nearing the top of the learning curve. So, controlling WALL-E and EVE were only slightly challenging for me, which means that your typical adolescent and preadolescent could probably have them both dancing on the head of a pin.

I wish I could say that game control with the PSP was just as easy, but it wasn't. Moving WALL-E is accomplished with the Analog Stick while the L and R Buttons control the camera angle. Now here comes that game play exception that I eluded to earlier: Moving WALL-E through some of the levels of the game requires finesse that the analog stick has trouble delivering. Right now, as I write this review, I am stuck on a level that I can't get through because the analog stick won't deliver the quick response needed to move WALL-E along. Now I'm sure there is a trick but I can't seem to figure it out... Therefore I, as a reviewer, have been bested by this game. That said, Nik couldn’t seem to figure it out either, and he's supposed to be my Ace in the Hole. The level involves chasing EVE in order to get her attention. EVE flies, WALL-E cannot, moreover EVE flies over obstacles, which WALL-E has to jump, skirt, or go under. At one point Nik informed me that he tried shooting EVE with WALL-E's laser to get her attention, I told him that, "Yep, I tried that also, but to no avail." Eventually, I figured we'll find a hint online to get us through this level, but until the, we’ve given up.

I should point out though, that the PSP version of the game does run you through a WALL-E evaluation course, which takes place 700 years prior to our story when all of the WALL-Es are alive and functioning. This evaluation course allows the player to get hands-on experience with WALL-E… But there’s only so much practice that one can do.

Game Bonuses

Both games require you to collect items during game play to unlock special features of the game, which can include videos, behind the scenes at Pixar, and sound effects. Artifacts like binoculars and a boomerang are sought out in PSP version of the game, while on the other hand, Pixar characters like Buzz and Woody are hidden amongst the garbage of Earth in the PS3 version.

Both games have multiplayer capabilities, but they are restricted to the mini games, and you'll need an additional game unit in the case of the PSP. Tonya and I gave the multiplayer mini games a try on the PS3 and found the lack of a complete set of rules to be such a distraction that when we eventually figured out how to play the game, we were no longer interested in playing the game.

Game Misses

Both games employ auto save at key points during the game and there is no quick save, which means that if you die during the ‘final step’ before the next auto save, you’re sent back to your last save which can mean a repeat of the level, an annoyingly drawn-out repeat of the instructions for that particular segment, or a seemingly endless loop of the music for that segment. At one point Nik told me he was glad we advanced because he was really getting sick of that song.

Speaking of songs, the PSP version features an endless loop of “Put On Your Sunday Clothes” from the musical Hello Dolly, which was featured in the movie. Luckily, you can turn it off by clicking the downward directional button. I’m sorry, but there are just so many times you can put up with: Out there/There's a world outside of Yonkers/Way out there beyond this hick town, Barnaby.

Overall Impressions

Nik liked the movie so of course he enjoyed the opportunity to play both versions of the video game. However, like me, he found the analog stick on the PSP detrimental to game play so he preferred the PS3 version of the game. Therefore, he's giving the PS3 version 90 Thumbs-Up out of his patent 100 and 50 Thumbs-Up for the PSP version. As for me, well I can't say that WALL-E was my favorite Pixar movie, in fact I thought it was pretty much middle of the road. I feel the same way about the game, so I can only give the PS3 version of the game 4 Dancing Elephants out of 8 and the PSP version 3 Dancing Elephants because I think it's kind of important to actually be able to play the game.

Oh, and if you haven’t done so already, be sure to check out the reviews for the DS version of WALL-E by Kevin Cummings and the Wii version by P.D. Love.

Parting Thoughts

When I read Kevin's review I was really impressed that he had gotten all the way through WALL-E for the DS until found out via a correspondence that it was actually his 17-year-old son who championed the game and Kevin merely observed the action over his son's shoulder. Not one to pass up on an opportunity like that, I offered to fly Kevin's son out to Chicago to finish up the review for the PSP version of WALL-E. However, Kevin informed me that I would also be responsible for feeding the 17-year-old, so I had to balk on my offer.
