Review: Spy Gear Dart Blaster

Tags:

When I was a kid, one of my friends had Battlestar Galactica action figures, including both the Colonial Viper and the Cylon Raider. His Viper shot little red pegs for lasers, but the red peg on the viper just popped out about 1/4". I found out many years later that this change came for safety reasons as toys across the board lost the ability to shoot anything.

Dart Blaster

Well, if that's the case, then the Spy Gear Dart Blaster should be banned immediately. That said, we love this thing!

The wrist-mounted shooter attaches via a Velcro strap to the palm of the child's hand. It comes loaded with 3 suction-cupped darts and three more in reserve. The spring-loaded darts fire with a thumb trigger and can be fired semi-automatically. A "Lazer Aiming Light" (not an actual laser, so safe on the eyes) hyelps the child aim, and the accuracy is excellent for a child's toy.

Now, safety is a factor here and can't be brushed off entirely. The darts are plastic with rubbery suction cups, so the warning on the box and instructions to not aim at eyes or face is not to be taken lightly. If kids are using these against each other (and they will), I recommend safety goggles or other eye protection. If you're looking for something with a bit less force behind it, you might prefer one of the Nerf dart guns instead, although they don't attach to the wrist and hide under a jacket sleeve, thus losing the cool factor a bit.

Wild Planet's website does not offer replacement darts, so kids will want to make sure to recover their ammunition after firing. Hopefully, more darts will be available in the future.

My only major complaint about this toy is that it's too small for my hands. It fits all the kids' hands and even Teresa's, but I have big "gorilla hands." Of course, they made this for kids, not dads, so I guess I'll have to let the kids use it to defend themselves against my Nerf gun, and a good time will be had by all.
