Review: Hyper Blast Anytime you can combine math and physical
activity, you have my attention. Make it a fun indoor/outdoor game, and
you may be onto something. So when Wild Planet sent us "Hyper Blast:
The Fast-Paced Launch the Numbers Game," my curiosity piqued. The game consists of a sturdy plastic base with a large button on top for stepping on and five balls, each of which has a different number (1-5, nothing complicated) and color. Players choose from one of four games, all of which go something like this: press the big button with your foot, which shoots the balls in all directions via lever action (no springs or electronics in the launching mechanism: harder stomp = bigger scatter). Collect the balls, either in any order or in the order a voice calls out, like sequential or using simple math: "two plus three!" Players can play most of the games with 1-4 players (yes, race against the clock even if you don't have a playmate). With our family of five, since players take turns collecting balls anyway, I see no reason why the games couldn't have accommodated more players, so don't count on this one for your next birthday party unless it's just a few close friends. The game plays well. It's easy to understand, and especially outside, the balls and timer keep kids running. Kids who need practice memorizing their basic math facts will find this game a good motivator. It's a simple design with enough variety to keep it interesting, and parents can use it on a rainy day to help kids burn off energy or on a dry day to get them out of the house. This is a decent game and a lot of fun while engaging the brain and muscles. Wild Planet rates it for age 6+, and we recommend it for up through pre-teens, but definitely more for age 7-9.
