I've mentioned before in previous reviews (Wall-E, Kungfu Panda) that I
was given the advice to steer clear of move themed games. But, as I
have stated, the kids seem to enjoy them so even if the overall game
play has not been superb, the games have been a big hit. Madagascar 2,
the Wii game, is perhaps the biggest hit in this category to date.
Madagascar, the original movie, was a great hit with our entire
household. It was funny, witty and very entertaining. The Wii game
for Madagascar 2 follows in line with these characteristics. Comments
by the characters add humor while the game play is a variety of events
and activities that are fun for the whole family.
The game is broken down into sections consisting of the story line play
and what is called the arcade, which is a variety of games. The
storyline has the player take on a character from the movie (Alex the
lion, Gloria the hippo, Melman the giraffe or Marty the zebra) and
navigate through the jungle, racing computer characters or beating them
in challenges like chasing butterflies or swiming around a course on
the pond. We played the story line for a while but didn't get too
terribly far. Once we found the arcade, we never turned back.
The Arcade is where the fun is. Games include mini golf, soccer,
musical chairs and diving. There is even a chess-style game where
characters battle on the checkered board. The variety of games is wide
and the fun vast. None of the games are necessarily complex or high in
gaming content value but I as the adult found them as fun as the kids.
Mini golf in particular can occupy a lot of play as you figure out the
angles and speed with which you can master the 9 hole course. A
version of hot potato is fun as characters explode when stuck with the
pulsating Durian. Soccer can get heated as you take on another player or the computer in a 2 on 2 match.
All in all, Madagascar 2 packs a lot of fun for all ages. The
characters' personalities and comments keep it lively and the variety
of challenges and games keep the game play fun. Even though we haven't
been out to see the movie yet, we found the game very enjoyable and it
has increased anticipation to see the movie although it may have also
allowed us to wait a little longer since we have the game to entertain
us for now.
