Island Sports Party - Summer Sports 2 by Destineer is a game packed with, well, games. It is like an island party Olympics with basketball, soccer, archery, bocce, target football and even shuffleboard. You can compete with up to four players or have the computer "Dude" or "Dudette" take you on. You assume the role of an "islander" and you just can't beat that kind of tan after a long Winter in the States. SummerSports2.jpg

But seriously, this game packs a lot into one package. There are several basketball related games include 2-on-2, a Slam Dunk contest, H-O-R-S-E and Around the World. My only problem is that I find the controls a bit too complicated for basketball and could never really figure out how to shoot before getting frustrated and going to something else. Granted, if I were 20 years younger I might get the hang of it more easily but for me, basketball just wasn't going to be my thing with this game.

What I did really like was shuffleboard. This was fun and challenging while not being overly difficult. Also, archery and bocce are a lot of fun with fairly easy to operate controls. The archery in particular rivals that of any other game I have seen, even though the motions for most are the same. The Island mini-golf was average compared to other mini-golf games I have played. The kids liked it due to some of the routes your ball takes through a jungle-esque course so at least the surroundings added to the game play.

Throughout the challenges you have the chance to win badges for different events, whether it be a perfect game, keeping your opponent scoreless or even less fortunate things like getting too high a score on mini-golf. Badges can be saved and kept as you progress to show your worth (or unworthiness, if that is the case). Also, progression will allow you to unlock other characters.

As I mentioned, I found several of these games fun but overall the use of the Wii controls left a lot to be desired. The controller seemed over sensitive many times and using the natural motions for things like pushing the shuffle board seems to not work as expected, causing a lot of frustration. Also, the use of buttons and motion sequences seemed awkward and different from other games making it somewhat counter-intuitive. Of course if one spent a lot of time working with this game the motions would come more naturally but being one who hops from game to game it caused more angst than fun at times.

Although I love aspects of this game, I just can't figure out how to succeed in about half of it and find frustration the end result. I would imagine most of the game would be a big hit with a teenage crowd but for me it was a bit too confusing and my boys (6 and 8) couldn't work the controls very well either. I guess were the bookends on the target audience.

It's not every day

Man, it's not every day you find a video game with shuffleboard in it! This seems like a really cool game because of the variety of different competitions it offers.
