Review: TekCase for DSi and DS Lite

TekCase: PinkWith a mobile videogame console comes an inherent danger: impact damage. I'm clumsier and more drop-prone than my kids, so some kind of protective shell just makes sense, since a carrying case is all fine and good until someone bumps you while playing. The TekCase from TeknoCreations answers this call with some great additional features. TeknoCreations makes the TekCase for both DS Lite and DSi--we tested the DSi version, but they should be equivalent—note that they're not interchangeable, due to the different sizes and power requirements of the two units. The DSi version also has a hole on the lid for the camera lens.

Available in black and pink, the case serves two functions: charging and protection. Those uncomfortable with the matte finish of the DSi may appreciate the glossy texture of this case. The console fits snugly and attaches firmly to the lid, not hampering the opening and shutting of the lid, although the lid cannot open completely flat with the TekCase on. (For me, I found this to be a feature, not a bug, as I don't like it completely flat but would often bump it open that far.) The difference is only a few degrees, so unless you prefer completely flat, you won't notice the difference. The case prevents scratches and bumps, absorbing the impact of most drops. A silicone case would probably provide more impact protection and survive a multi-story fall better, but this should be enough protection for most needs. Holes in the case provide access to all lights, buttons, and ports easily, not interfering with gameplay at all. Because it only adds 1/16" to each side, the DSi will still fit in most carrying cases, although you'll want to check your case for flexibility and space. Note also that a charging plug extends 1/2" out the back, which will add to the overall dimensions.

TekCase: BlackThe charger seriously impressed us. Allowing you to charge both its backup battery and the DSi battery at the same time, we got over 4 extra hours of gameplay at maximum brightness, so lowering brightness will extend battery life even longer, making it ideal for travel. Users can charge with the included cord via either an AC outlet or a computer's USB port, which gives great versatility.

Overall, we're extremely impressed with the TekCase and recommend it highly. You'll still need a case to store your games and a screen protector to prevent screen wear and scratches, but the TekCase will extend not only your battery life, but the life of the DS console itself.
