Cell phones, pedal power
Thanks for bringing up the cell phone studies. I remember AAA did a similar study in the early to mid 90s when cell phones were really taking off. They also concluded that it doesn't matter if you're on hands free or not, the problem isn't the phone, but the distraction of the conversation.
One of the rules for my nephew, who has his learner's permit, is no friends in the car for the first year. I think it is a great rule for someone just venturing out on the road. Similar rules for the radio can be implemented. After new driver's get some experience, we can slowly bring things like radio and friends into th picture, but I agree that people need to pull over to take phone calls, or turn it off. Is there anything that important that it couldn't wait until you get to your destination or a travel break?
Pedal Power: Sorry it has been done by Dave Butcher. There are quite a few people and companies promoting "Off the Grid" lifestyles. A quick search will result in lots more information about charging all sorts of things without batteries or outlets.
Another good science trick for taking advantage of the loss of surface tension of water with detergent or soap is to take soapy water and use a Q-tip to write secret messages on the bathroom mirror. The next person to take a steamy shower will find the message because the water vapor won't stick to the mirror where the the soap was. Also a way to avoid more expensive anti-fog goop for the mirrors.
