Wii Games for Preschool & Kindergarten Children

For older consoles such as the Nintendo DS and Sony PS2, you can generally find games for pre-readers that offer kid-friendly gameplay and minimal reading. Just look for the "EC" rating on games or such licensed characters as Dora the Explorer or Sesame Street favorites. But the Wii, even though it excels at family-friendly games has no EC games currently available.

So if you're looking for a game for a pre-reader, what games would work?

A lot of games just need a parent to set them up, and once they're ready to play, they can be played mostly without reading. Racing games and other kid-oriented games like the Barbie and Disney titles will generally work well, and lots of virtual console games, plus Wii Sports and parts of Wii Play.

The list of games a pre-reader child can play without help is limited right now to pretty much just Cosmic Family, which uses a spoken and graphical menu system and instructions, no reading required. The upcoming Go Diego Go game also promises to be the first preschool oriented game for the Wii (although Cosmic Family beat them to it), so we'll see whetyher the menu structure is equally preschool-friendly.

As family-friendly as the Wii is, it still has a noticeable dirth of preschool games, so that will hopefully change in the near future.

My son, who is only 3, loves

My son, who is only 3, loves to play Zelda.

Disney Princess

I am in the process of trying to find another game my 4 year old can play without reading the text in the directions and conversations.

She has beat and mastered the Disney Princess game for the Wii. It is a wonderful game that she could do while three years old with virtually no help from me. It is awesome. I just wish Disney would come out with another one!!

I disagree. While it is

I disagree. While it is very easy to play for pre-readers, its use of nunchuk plus wii remote made it ackward and frustrating for new and young players. Also the camera angles lack alot of streamlining. So far my preschoolers have cleared Ariel's chapters, but not before getting trapped in the cave as they couldnt see the exit.

Diego

The Diego game is really well designed for kids. Our 3yo and 5yo can play it without any help. The controls are really simple, and there is a "parent help mode" if they do happen to get stuck, which allows you to help them with a second wii-mote. If your kids are into Dora/Diego, it's well worth it.

Wii for little kids

My daughter really enjoys the Wii sports games that come with the Wii (especially bowling, which is easier for younger kids.) Boxing is too hard for her, and we bought her Boom Blox, but she doesn't have the dexterity to play it.

I'm looking for a game where kids put make up and clothes on a doll -- anyone know one.

wii games for boys

Iam disappointed that I can not seem to find more action orientated wii games that do not require reading. My 5 year-old son loves PS3 games like Spiderman and the Hulk, but we haven't been able to find any similar wii games that don't involve wading through an unrealistic amount of text. Are there any wii games in which the characters actually talk?

Wii I Spy by Scholastic...

I'm with all of you, the preschool games are still lacking!!!
We did however go out on a limb and try the I spy product from Scholastic...It's great for new readers, and helps develope problem solving as well as gaming skills. Also if they havn't quite mastered the nunchuk it doesnt require one.
We play as a family, and she can play it on her own...best product ive tried so far...

ben 10

my 5 year old son was able to play the ben 10 protector of earth really well. i also got ben 10 alien force and he can play it but in spots where its difficult, you can come in and help with the other remote, then get back out just as easily so they can do it on their own again.

I bought the Disney Princess

I bought the Disney Princess game for my 3 year old daughter and she loves it, but it is frustrating for her because she gets stuck a lot. She tries to make her princess go one way and gets stuck behind a bush and gets upset. The little games in it are hard for her (like chasing the ducks into the pen or catching ariel's treasures, and having to point the remote at the screen while pressing A) so it takes her some time, but she manages. She loves the game, but I wish there was a game made for her that she could do completely on her own. the use of 2 controllers is a little hard for her little hands. But, you do get to choose your dress and color and stuff for your princess, so little girls love this game. It's helping her learn how to use the wii remote. She's a little too small for it I guess. I want to try the dora game, but I'm afraid it will be worse!

My son (just turned 5) loves Emergency Heros

The reviews trash this game due to its repetition and lack of an interesting plot. I would agree, if it we're intended for me, I'd be board with it in a few hours. My 5-year old boy absolutely loves it! It plays with no reading; you can't get stuck; and starts out really easy so they can get the hang of it. He always has to go bring his ambulance and police car to the wii to play with him. I highly recommend buying a steering wheel. The one that comes with Mario Kart Wii is excellent (also one of my son's favorite games). I bought an aftermarket wheel from Gamespot, but he and his friends keep trying to play with it upside down. You might also consider downloading Mario 64 for the Wii (Virtual Console) or get Mario sunshine for the Gamecube (plays on the wii). My son can mostly play the mario games with just a little help here and there.
