Getting an ActiveX warning? If you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer for Windows, you may get a warning when you come to this site: "To help protect your security, Internet Explorer stopped this site from installing an ActiveX control on your computer. Click here for details...." Just FYI, we're not trying to hack you. In fact, not being regular IE users, we were unaware of this until recently and were surprised to see this. A little quick research revealed the culprit. At the bottom of every page is a banner from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. The banner uses Java to cycle pictures of missing children in hopes that you might recognize one, call the center's phone, and help get the child home. A former foster parents, Teresa and I are strong advocates of exploited children, which is why we chose to add this banner to our site, but use your own discretion as to whether you want to enable the control or not. The banner was created by a national agency, so we assume it to be safe, but we're not Java code monkeys, so we don't know for sure. If you're very concerned about security, you may want to consider using a different browser like Firefox, which runs Java without ActiveX and is considered more secure overall by security experts, but Firefox doesn't have the parental control options of Internet Explorer. Either way, you can use our site, benefit from its content, leave your feedback, and rest secure that we will never do anything to take advantage of you in any way--we are here to help families.
